The future of municipalities: Autonomous mobility, smart public services and more

How will we move, work and live in the future? What role will artificial intelligence and autonomous systems play in our everyday lives? In my latest article "The community of the future", published in Der Standard on November 27, 2024, I take a look at innovative mobility concepts and their social impact.

While self-driving cabs have long been part of everyday life in metropolitan areas such as San Francisco, many rural regions still lack an efficient, flexible transportation solution. But that is about to change: Autonomous minibuses could soon be driving exactly when they are needed - around the clock and without a rigid timetable. Mobile recycling stations that collect recyclables directly from doorsteps are also more than just an idea: they could replace stationary collection points and significantly reduce the burden on municipal budgets.

The question of how these technological developments will affect our social structures is particularly exciting. Will we live more in communities again in the future instead of losing ourselves in anonymous cities? Can autonomous restaurants, so-called self-driving pubs, strengthen social interaction in rural regions? And what does it mean for the healthcare system if mobile hospitals and care robots enable care to be provided where people feel most comfortable - at home?

In my article, I discuss these and other questions about the future of services of general interest. I invite you to take a look at a possible future - and perhaps share your own thoughts on the subject.
